Think Enjoying Retirement
By Paul Mobley
Thinking about your retirement? It can be scary or it can be something to look forward to. It depends on your thinking.
Retired but not fully pleased with your situation? Then know that you can change it to something you would enjoy. Applying positive and productive thinking and it will change for the better.
So a review of possibilities can be rewarding for you.
Let me assume that your retirement income does now, or will, allow you to live only on it. If your retirement income is insufficient then it is obvious that you may need to gain another income through some kind of employment.
1. The very first item that must be attended to is that of deciding whether you want to be 100% retired, or not. This means deciding whether you want 100% control of your time so that you may do whatever you want. It means that no one beyond family dictates how your time will be spent each day. It also means having an income that supports 100% retirement.
2. Okay, that first item is done and you want a required activity of your choosing. So what can you choose?
A job is an obvious choice. And there are many for retirees. From a grocery store bagger, to a store clerk, to consulting for a business, to returning to part time work for the company you just retired from including computer work at home. The list is many for Employers have come to realize that older persons, retirees, are more dependable and more reliable for getting the job done. You can even suggest a job to employers, make your own job. So jobs are available.
What about work at home? As just suggested you may do computer work at home for businesses. This can be anything from preparing letters, to preparing advertisements for a business, to writing reports, to bookkeeping, and on that list goes. Sell the idea of what you can do for a business. Though hard to achieve success you could set up a web site where you sell information, sell advice that you are now an expert in, and it can be a free site or a dot.com for which you pay a monthly fee. You could also start a newsletter and seek paying subscribers. And you could do research using the Internet and libraries.
Perhaps you would like the rewarding efforts of volunteer work. Check your local hospital, check with a VA hospital in your area, nursing homes, Hospice, fire department, police, your library, the local chamber of commerce, and more. These can be anything from answering the phone, to writing letters, to helping with care of people, to running errands, to deliveries, to shopping for shut-ins, and many more. And do not forget your church which likely needs volunteers for anything from cleaning the building, to cooking, to teaching, to delivering food to shut-ins.
Consider that you are now an expert in some field and could be speaking by signing up at your local chamber of commerce, volunteering at schools, speaking to local businesses, or becoming an advisor for Junior Achievement. Along the same lines you might become a teacher at church, or for local schools of all types. Hobbies can also be rewarding and great pleasure.
3. Now you should know that the type and quantity of activities is almost endless. There is something for every retiree. There is no need to sit at home lonely, depressed, inactive. You can be occupied with useful activities.
4. Once you have decided on an activity it is time to go after it. Do not be timid. Ask what is available from employers and others. If they say "nothing" then suggest something, especially if it is a business or institution you prefer.
Retirement can be useful to others and for self, and even exciting.
You are now an expert at something. Make use of it. But remember that the initiative is up to you.
Many think that when a person retires they are done. Make them see different. Find a niche you like and go after it.
