The Power Of Stress - At Your Service

By Jacleen Allen

In my opinion, all experiences of emotional or mental “stress” are the result of focusing on what is not wanted… and therein lies the “problem”.

According to all the latest research, demonstrated in such popular screen movies as ‘What the Bleep Do We Know’ and ‘The Secret’, it is what we focus on that becomes our reality.

So, if that’s true, and I believe it is, why then do we continue to focus on what we don’t want?

I believe most people focus on what they don't want because through the various stages of our upbringing and schooling, and similarly through our adult lives we have learnt to compromise our heart's desires. We've learnt that to create what we really want requires “greatness” and although we may have an innate knowing that somehow we have the potential of greatness, we also have learnt that not all of us are going to live up to that potential and mostly blame that on our circumstances.

Many of today's therapeutic systems reinforce this orientation through delving into what are often termed our unconscious beliefs, formed as we were growing up in response to our circumstances, to see what is holding us back and trying to change those beliefs but although the experience of life may improve a little, or even a lot in the short term, eventually we fall victim once again to circumstances.

What if we could live in a completely different orientation where our beliefs, nor our circumstances really didn’t matter? What if we could live our lives in the "creative orientation", the way we would love them to be, even if we still believed the world is not safe, or we are insignificant, or we can’t trust anyone, or we’re not good enough? Does that excite you?

You must realise that the stress you experience as a result of focusing on what you don't want holds a lot of power invested by you and that power can be harnessed and focused on creating what it is that you do want, which I'm guessing is probably the opposite of what you're currently experiencing.

If you're looking for a quick fix to relieve stress related to money, relationships, work, study, parenting, health, or any other "problem" I would suggest that you already employ coping mechanisms that do that (eg. over the counter drugs, "recreational" drugs, alcohol, food, sex and diversions of many kinds). Want I want you to do is use that energy that you feel in your distress to create what it is you really do want.

From my own experience I can share with you that my coping mechanisms in the past were sedating myself with comfort food (mostly chocolate) and more recently, distracting myself with movies when I was under stress. I didn't realise that what I was doing was pushing down the energy I'd created for myself to actually change the situation I didn't want into one that I did! When I really "got" that I could see how I'd been sabotaging the creation of what I wanted because every time I sedated myself I was no longer under tension and I resigned myself once again to the situation until the next time the stresses reared up, once again sedating myself and the cycle continuing. As painful as this was for me, I had thought that I needed to get rid of the stress, but I now see it as a gift and one that I would like for you to see as a gift also.

Life then becomes a game, as it was always meant to be.

Now that Ashton is almost 3yrs old Jacleen has less restrictions on her time and is once again working on the cutting edge of stress management now offering a pilot coaching program with a select group of participants.
