The Introductory Coaching Session
Most coaches offer a free introductory coaching session during which you can get to know each other and decide whether coaching - and this particular coach - is for you.
How do you get the most out of an introductory coaching session?
It is useful to come to an introductory session with something you would like to focus on in that one session (for example, making a presentation, going for a job interview, enjoying a first date). Find out what it feels like to actually be coached rather than the coach telling you how they do what they do.
Ask questions. The more questions you ask, the better feel you will get of the coach's style and whether you will be able to form a good relationship. So what sort of questions should you ask a potential coach?
- How long have they been coaching?
- What do they specialize in?
- Is their area of specialism what you are looking for in coaching?
- How long do their coaching sessions last?
- Do they coach face to face or by telephone or email?
- How much does the coaching cost?
- How many sessions do they ask you to commit to?
At the end of the day, it comes down to who do you feel comfortable with and whether or not you feel your prospective coach will stretch and challenge you to get you where you want to go?
