Selling Yourself As A Coach
Tips and tricks on marketing your coaching services
The popularity of coaching both in the workplace and at home provides many opportunities for coaches to make a full time living. However, the actual number of coaches and coach practitioners is also on the increase: be aware that while the market may be growing, so is the competition!
There are many hundreds of websites and books and articles and training courses on how to sell yourself as a coach. Some of these resources are free. Others can cost you a lot of money, and may not be quite the 'miracle' checklist or guide that you are looking for to further your business.
Remember that selling yourself as a coach is just the same as selling any other service:
- be professional at all times, in image and conduct
- over-deliver (the best way to get recommendations)
- ask satisfied clients to recommend you and provide references
- use your personal contacts
- be realistic about what sort of promotion and advertising you can afford.
- test any advertising that you do buy to make sure that you are getting value for money
- stay on top of the profession and abreast of the latest developments
- network with other professionals and other coaches
- use the web to get out and about amongst your prospective clients - and your competition.*
You should also be realistic about the sort of work that you really want to do. As you will tell your clients - you are most likely to find success and happiness if you are doing something you really enjoy!
In the same way, think about what sort of people and organizations you want to work with, and what particular form of coaching you want to specialize in.
Selling yourself can be the hardest sell of all. But it also provides a real opportunity for you to decide exactly how, where and when you want to fit into the thriving marketplace. And to develop resources and means of communication that sell you to the right people at the right time.
