Phobias
The term phobia (from the Greek word for fear) is used to describe irrational or excessive fear of any given object or agenda – from spiders to open spaces, and from snakes to water.
Many people simply avoid the object of their phobia. However, this can prove unworkable: for example, needing to go to work when you are agoraphobic or wanting to help your child to learn to swim when you are hydrophobic.
Phobias range from inconvenient to paralysing
There are also varying degrees of phobias, ranging from the inconvenient dislike of a particular object or objects, to a constant paralysing concern that we are going to be confronted by the subject of a phobia - however unlikely a scenario that may be.
Phobia treatments
There are a variety of ‘cures’ for phobias, from drug treatment to cognitive behavioural therapy which helps the sufferer to understand where his or her phobia was created and through this process learn to deconstruct it too.
The vast majority of phobias are treatable. Coaching and hypnotherapy can help you to deconstruct and or eradicate your fear if it is interfering with your daily routines and general well-being.
More About Phobias
Fears And Phobias - A Brief Overview Psychiatry identifies three different categories of phobia: agoraphobia (fear of open spaces), social phobia (an irrational anxiety brought forth by exposure to certain social situations, leading to avoidance behaviour) and specific phobia (a persistent and irrational fear in response to some specific stimulus, which commonly results in avoidance of/withdrawal from that stimulus).
Symptoms of Phobia Once the fear has been triggered the physical reaction can lead to a cycle of distress. The body responds to any naturally stressful situation by tensing up. This helps the person perform better. However if the reaction is misinterpreted and excessive this can lead to unnecessarily high levels of tension.
