We all deal with stress on some level, whether it is work related; home life; or just the daily grind of meeting constant demands. Stress can lead to anxiety. In order to cope, you need to know the difference between stress and anxiety so that you can properly deal with either condition when it strikes.
The truth of the matter is that stress and anxiety are synonymous. Here are examples of both symptoms to give you an idea as to how related they really are.
Let's assume you are given a project at work along with a very short deadline. You have determined this will take hours, beyond your work day, to complete. The stress begins to build at that moment when you realize you will not have time to prepare dinner and say goodnight to your children, or you will miss the doctor's appointment that took months to book. The symptoms of stress may include palpitations; sweating; anxiety; irritability and high blood pressure.
Anxiety, on the other hand, is more insidious. It seemingly creeps up on you when you least expect it. Let's assume again that you are driving in your car on the way home. You hit bumper to bumper traffic, and are just sitting there for what seems like hours. Suddenly, you experience a funny feeling in your gut which begins to encompass your entire body. Your peripheral vision widens, your heart races, you experience dry mouth, and you become fearful that something dreadful is going to happen.
Stress and anxiety can lead to health problems which may become acute. Stress can cause anxiety attacks which can escalate to panic attacks. The severity of each of these symptoms is not to be dismissed. The underlying causes need to be investigated to determine what appropriate measures can be taken to avoid them from reoccurring again.
